Halkidiki also Chalkidiki is the prefecture in northern Greece, district of Central Macedonia and is very close to the second biggest city in Greece - Thessaloniki.
It occupies the southern part of the Halkidiki peninsula resembling a hand with three "fingers" - Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos (Agion Oros) . Chalkidiki' s administrative center and capital is the town of Polygyros, located in the center of the peninsula. The area of the region is 2 918km2 and the population is over 106 000 people. Other large towns are Nea Moudania, Nea Kallikrateia and the major municipalities are Moudania, Kallikrateia and Kassandra.
In ancient times, Chalkidiki was part of Thrace and the ancient city of Stageira was the birthplace of the great philosopher Aristotle.
There are many summer resorts on the beaches of all three peninsulas like Ouranoupolis, Neos Marmaras (Porto Carras), Yerakini (Gerakina Beach), Sani Resort, Nikiti, Psakoudia, Kallithea and others.
